Top Money Saving Tips for Planning a Home Remodel

Top Money Saving Tips for Planning a Home Remodel, guest post by Hannah West, writer at Home Improvement Leads

Top Money Saving Tips for Planning a Home Remodel | Money Savvy Living

We’ve all heard horror stories of a manageable home remodel growing into a monster that feasts on money, time, and patience between family members. But proper planning and saving techniques can prepare you for unexpected issues, ease stress, and leave you content with the decisions you’ve made. Here are some of our favorite tips, here at Home Improvement Leads, for keeping things reasonable and slashing costs on your home remodel.

Give Yourself a Cushion

Unforeseen circumstances can cause unnecessary anxiety over the budget and the schedule. They’re “unnecessary” because even though you may not be able to specifically anticipate corroded pipes or a bad foundation, you should anticipate some type of issue, especially when remodeling an older home. Building a 15 to 20 percent cushion for unforeseen circumstances helps you keep the rest of the remodel realistic.

The issues may not even be structural. In fact, you may change your mind about a choice you made in the conceptual stage that just isn’t panning out the way you wanted. Either way, put that cushion in the budget. If you don’t use it, no harm done!

Top Money Saving Tips for Planning a Home Remodel | Money Savvy Living

Use Reclaimed Materials

Finding quality salvaged materials is the perfect solution for homeowners concerned about the environment and/or their wallet. It’s an even better solution for the DIYers out there since some contractors prefer to only work with new materials. Our passion for eco-friendly living gets stronger every day, so it’s likely that future prospective home buyers will appreciate the wise use of resources and the character that reclaimed materials add. But if you’re thinking of selling your home at some point, make sure not to do anything too outlandish—you don’t want homeowners to walk in and see their own renovation list.

Handle Your Own Demo

Maybe you’re not enough of a DIY pro to handle the reno yourself. But you can still get your hands dirty by doing your own demo—and saving money in the process. All you need are a few handheld tools and some willpower. But before you go knocking down walls, make sure you know what you’re doing; you need to look out for electrical wiring, plumbing, and load-bearing walls. It’s better to pay for professional demo than to cause damage by hacking aimlessly at the walls.

Top Money Saving Tips for Planning a Home Remodel | Money Savvy Living

Avoid Rearranging Plumbing Fixtures

Bathrooms and kitchens get a ton of daily use, so the layout of these rooms has to be functional. But if you’re simply tired of the aesthetic and want to move things around, consider leaving fixtures like the toilet and sink where they are. There’s a lot going on behind the walls of your home, and moving a toilet just a couple feet can costs thousands in plumbing costs. If you can give your bathroom or kitchen a facelift without contending with the plumbing, you could save thousands.

Think Long-Term

It doesn’t do much good to settle for a more affordable option only to find it needs to be replaced sooner than the premium option you actually wanted. For example, asphalt roofing can be half the price of premium metal, but it can also have less than half the life expectancy. Cast your vision into the future and think about home value, durability, and what you want to come home to everyday.

Pay Attention to the Details

You may think big savings only come from compromising on big wish list items like countertops, flooring, cabinets, etc. But a home remodel involves countless small details, many of which involve just a little extra labor that all adds up. For example, if your new design arbitrarily requires custom measurements as opposed to off-the-shelf dimension, that means you’re paying someone to trim and adjust when the material could be directly installed instead. Planning a home renovation wisely is about more than finding a compromise here and there. Do everything with intention and you will find yourself saving money left and right.

6 Ways to Save Money on Cleaning Products

6 ways to save money on cleaning products

6 ways to save money on cleaning products | Money Savvy Living

This guest post is by Nicole Gardiner, owner of Dream Cleaners London

Are you sick and tired of spending a considerate amount of your hard earned money on cleaning products? It is not easy taking care of an entire house’s cleaning chores without having to spend way too much money than you wished on cleaning.

Nowadays the stores are flooded with various cleaning products and tools from different companies, all of which have great advertisements that tell you why that product is the best and how its price is justifiable. But you do not need to believe that just because a certain product is expensive it will be the most efficient one.

There are ways you can limit your cleaning budget by a lot. If you are really set on decreasing your budget here are some things you can do:

Buy the store-brand alternatives. Many big retail stores have their own brands and they have cleaning products as well. I know that these kinds of products are deemed ‘bad’ and ‘inefficient’, but some stores actually have pretty good cleaning products. You just need to try a few of them until you find the ones you like.

Limit the number of products. Instead of having a floor cleaner, a tile and grouting cleaners, a universal cleaner, etc. just use one of these for more purposes. They are all cleaning products and have the same chemicals and ingredients; you do not need to spend money on five products that do the same work.

Use liquid dish soap. It is cheap, it smells nice and it is very efficient in cleaning a lot of things. Clean the sink, clean stains from the cabinets’ doors and kitchen counter, clean mirrors, the microwave, stove tops. Dish soap might not be at the top of the cleaning products chain but it sure is efficient as many of the expensive products that you do not really need.

Sales and coupons. There are a lot of coupons that can be found in newspapers or received from stores that can actually greatly decrease the price of cleaning tools or products. And of course, try and keep up with sales in different stores, they run them on TV and have them in magazines. Do not underestimate a good sale.

Buy from the dollar store. They are filled with cleaning products and tools that you do not have to buy the most expensive alternative of. Buy the cheap versions of sponges, paper towels, spray bottles, metal sponges, etc. Some things really are not worth spending more than money than their dollar-store value is.

DIY cleaning products. With DIY cleaning products you get to save a ton of money. Dream Cleaners London says that there are many simple and natural ingredients that can be used to make efficient cleaning products. And the ingredients are cheap and they can be used for big quantities of products. So you will be saving money twice – once on cheap ingredients and once – on these products lasting you a long time and not needing to buy new ones.

And of course, try to repurpose old things and use them in your cleaning processes. For example, instead of buying new cloths and rags – cut your old clothes into pieces and use them for cleaning instead of throwing them away. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the sink or tile grouting instead of buying a special brush.

I assure you that even in a month you will feel the ease on your pocket. Keep your home clean and by using some of these tips. Spend your money on something useful or a gift for a loved one, not on cleaning products.

Nicole is a young mother of one little boy. She is running a small cleaning business and in her experience sometimes eco cleaning means money saving cleaning.

Adoption Day Surprise

Adoption Day Surprise

Adoption Day Surprise | Money Savvy Living

My niece Ava is adopted.  So every year, her adoption day is celebrated almost like a birthday…  Well, my sister and brother-in-law actually got her on February 6, but she finally got to come on February 9, so she kind of has an adoption week celebration…

For those of you that have gone through the process of an international adoption, I’m sure you will be able to appreciate how Ava’s mom (my sister, Alison) remembers bringing her home:

“10 years ago today we flew home from Guatemala with this precious girl. The flight attendant was so kind and told us that she let the pilot know that he had a special passenger on this flight. When we entered American airspace he came on and congratulated Ava – because at that moment she became a citizen. The older she gets the more meaningful our adoption day celebrations become.”

Ryan and Alison with baby Ava and Ava’s foster mom in Guatemala when they picked her up.

This year, I thought, what better way to celebrate her special day than with a little adoption day surprise!

As soon as I saw this, I knew Ava would love it: Scratch & Sniff Scented Nail Art from SmitCo Gifts for Girls.  The perfect gift for a 10-year-old girl, right?!  Of course, I got this to help her celebrate her adoption day, but this would be perfect for a birthday, holiday, or just because…

The Review:

SmitCo Gifts for Girls

The emoji theme of this nail art was cute, even the nail polish bottle lids were emojis—fun!  And the polish actually smelled good… nice and mild and fruity.  One of the best things about this set is that it is non-toxic and the nail polish peels right off when it’s dry.  So if you make a mistake or if it’s just time for a new color, you can easily peel the polish off.  Much better than using harsh nail polish remover!  The polish dried very quickly and my niece was able to put a decorative sticker right over the polish right away… and then, on to putting candles on her cake…

Adoption Day Surprise | Money Savvy Living

It definitely wouldn’t be a party without pizza and cake!  And of course, the kids just love any reason to get together… because for us, it’s all about family.

Adoption Day Surprise | Money Savvy Living

Even Derek realized it was a special celebration day and let Ava give him a hug!  Of course, we know he loves his cousins, but trying to get a five-year-old boy to let his cousins give him a hug doesn’t happen on a regular basis… LOL.

But I also have career ambitions and like the extra income… so I have created multiple streams of income for myself that I can build upon in my free time, and around my children’s schedules. Truly life changing! Here are a couple links from my blog that talk about my side businesses:

Start your own blog, and learn how to make money from blogging.

Make money from home while getting healthier and bridging the nutrition gap for your family

Start your own skincare business and help others who battle with feeling self-conscious because of a skin condition and better your financial situation.
